Frontiers win Pearl Bowl

The Fujitsu Frontiers won this year's Pearl Bowl, a tournament in spring for teams from the eastern part of Japan. In the championship game the Frontiers defeated the Onward Skylarks 20-6 in front of 13.634 spectators at the Tokyo Dome. The Frontiers advanced to the final by beating Gakusei-Engokai Rocbull 45-0 and the Kajima Deers 20-7 in first round games before knocking off Asahi Beer Silver Star in the semifinals 27-21 in double overtime. Against the Skylarks the Frontiers took a 7-0 lead five minutes and 41 seconds into the game when RB Hiroyuki Morimoto scored on a 15-yard run at the end of the first possession but later missed a couple of opportunities to increase the lead. Three minutes and 48 seconds into the third quarter the Frontiers made it 14-0 on a 14-yard touchdown pass from QB Mitsuhiro Tsukino, the game's MVP, to WR Satoshi Kawase. The Skylarks hurt themselves with four interceptions and did not score until five minutes und 17 seconds left in the game when - with the Frontiers leading 20-0 - QB Yuichi Tomizawa hit WR Yoshinobu Imoto with a 22-yard touchdown pass.
