Challengers victorious

The Asahi Soft Drinks Challengers won this year's Green Bowl, a spring tournament for X League teams from the western part of Japan. The Challengers beat the Fuji Xerox J-Stars 21-0 in the first round and the Kobe Finies 26-13 in the semifinals before routing the As One Black Eagles 48-0 at Nagai Stadium in Osaka. The Black Eagles who defeated Matsushita Denko Impulse in the seminfinals 17-14 on two big plays (a 77-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7 five minutes and four seconds into the first quarter and just 51 seconds after the Impulse had taken the lead and a 73-yard interception return to tie the game at 14 five minutes and 40 seconds into the third quarter) turned the ball over five times (three fumbles, two interceptions) and trailed already 22-0 at halftime. The most impressive players for the Challengers were RB Takeshi Sekine who ran for 135 Yards and three touchdowns (including a 70-yard run for a 34-0 lead midway through the third quarter) and WR Daishi Suekata, the game's MVP, with eight catches for 102 Yards and a 30-yard touchdown pass to increase the Challengers' lead to 16-0 one minute and 46 seconds into the second quarter.
