No surprises in X League openers
(September 10, 2013) - The 2013 X League season opened with lopsided victories for all nine teams that advanced to the second stage last season. In five of the week one games the losing teams were unable to score at all. The defending National Champion Obic Seagulls opened the season with a 31-0 win against the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Eagles at Kawasaki Stadium in the Central Division.
Although the Eagles never had a chance of winning the game because their offense was limited to 82 total yards by a tough Seagulls defense the dominance of the Seagulls did not show on the scoreboard through the first three quarters. RB Takuto Hara had given the Seagulls the early 7-0 lead with a 55-yard touchdown run in the fourth minute of the first quarter. That was the only score before halftime. Less than four minutes into the second half RB Takuya Furutani increased the lead to 14-0 with a 2-yard touchdown run. In the fourth the Seagulls added two touchdowns and a field goal.
The East Division game between the Asahi Beer Silver Star and the Nihon Unisys Bulls at Yokohama Stadium followed a similar script. Silver Star finally beat the Bulls by 27 points in a 34-7 win but had problems scoring in the first half. RB Shingo Hamada scored the only first half points with a 29-yard touchdown run four minutes and 50 seconds into the game. The second half was more entertaining, although the Bulls on offense were limited to just 76 total yards. The first few minutes of the third quarter saw a series of big plays in a span of just two and a half minutes. First WR Kazuya Togura caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from QB Reona Takahashi to increase the Silver Star's lead to 14-0. About two and a half minutes later LB Shota Honma gave the Bulls their only points with a 71-yard interception return. But just 13 seconds later Shingo Hamada scored his second touchdown with a 78-yard run.

Deers come back to win Pearl Bowl
(June 27, 2013) - The Kajima Deers erased a ten-point halftime deficit with two touchdowns early in the third quarter and claimed this year's Pearl Bowl with a 17-10 win against the Fujitsu Frontiers in the Tokyo Dome. Just 45 seconds into the second half QB Takuya Yamashiro threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to WR Naoki Maeda and five minutes and 30 seconds later the Deers took their first lead in the game (14-10) with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Yamashiro to WR Yujiro Iwai. With just under three minutes left in the game K Daisuke Aoki added a 31-yard field goal to increase the Deers' lead to seven points. The Frontiers had taken a 7-0 lead with a 7-yard touchdown run by RB Yusuke Shinji just five minutes into the game and added a short field goal (21 yards) in the third minute of the second quarter.

Frontiers surprise Seagulls
(May 26, 2013) - The Fujitsu Frontiers were the last team that beat the Obic Seagulls, and on Saturday they ended the Seagulls' remarkable run of almost three years without a loss with a 31-13 win at Kawasaki Stadium in the first semifinal game of the Pearl Bowl. The Seagulls had not lost a game in any competition since a 13-15 setback against the Frontiers in the final of the 2010 Pearl Bowl. The Frontiers converted two miscues of the Seagulls into a 9-0 lead after the first quarter and their defense held the Seagulls' offense to just 152 total yards (minus 21 rushing yards). After trailing 12-0 midway through the second quarter the Seagulls scored their first points with a 3-yard touchdown pass from QB Shun Sugawara to WR Noriaki Kinoshita 36 seconds before the end of the first half.
At the beginning of the second half it briefly looked like another Seagulls comeback in the making when LB Naoki Kosho scored on a 25-yard interception return that gave his team a 13-12 lead just ten seconds into the second half. But two minutes and five seconds later RB Kosuke Kamiyama put the Frontiers back in front with a 2-yard touchdown run and another four minutes and eight seconds later a 7-yard touchdown run by RB Yuichi Kon increased the lead to 12 points (25-13).
In the Pearl Bowl final the Frontiers will face the Kajima Deers in the Tokyo Dome on June 24. The Deers advanced to the final with a 27-12 win at Kawasaki Stadium against the Nojima Sagamihara Rise on Sunday. The Deers lead 10-0 after the first quarter and 13-6 at halftime before the Rise came within one point (12-13) with two field goals (20 and 25 yards) in the third and fourth quarter. Just one minute and 17 seconds after the second field goal the Deers scored on a 23-yard touchdown pass from QB Takuya Yamashiro to WR Kento Suzuki. Five minutes later Yamashiro threw his third touchdown pass - 40 yards to WR Yasushi Nakagawa - that gave his team a 15-point lead (27-12) with just over five minutes left to play.

Challengers win Green Bowl final
(May 22, 2013) - The Asahi Soft Drinks Challengers claimed their first Green Bowl title since 2006 with a 16-8 win against Panasonic Impulse in Kobe. The Challengers took the lead for good with a 60-yard touchdown pass from QB Tomotsuna Inoue to WR Tatsuya Kureta in the third quarter just 29 seconds after Impulse had taken a 8-3 lead with a 70-yard touchdown pass from QB Tetsuo Takata to WR Koji Honda. In the seventh minute of the fourth quarter the Challengers added another touchdown on a 2-yard run by RB Koji Hayashi.
The Challengers advanced to the final with a 25-10 semifinal win against the As One Black Eagles while the Impulse crushed the Elecom Kobe Finies 71-0 in their semifinal game. In last year's fall season the Challengers surprised Impulse in the final game of first stage play with a 12-10 win but later missed the semifinals with second stage losses to the Obic Seagulls and Asahi Beer Silver Star.

Seagulls win in Germany - again
(May 19, 2013) - The Obic Seagulls once again proved to be too much of a challenge for one of Germany's first division teams. In a battle of six-time national champions the Seagulls defeated the Düsseldorf Panther, Germany's oldest still existing football team (established in 1978), 34-3 in the second International Challenge Bowl in Düsseldorf, Germany. The Seagulls took a 12-0 lead in the first quarter on touchdown runs by RBs Takuya Furutani (1 yard) and Takuto Hara (5 yards) and were never threatened to lose the game.
A 12-yard touchdown pass from QB Shun Sugawara to WR Noriaki Kinoshita and a 28-yard field goal by K Yosuke Kaneoya gave the Seagulls a 22-0 lead at halftime. The Seagulls added two more points with a safety in the third quarter. The Panther avoided a shutout with a 38-yard field goal by K Sascha Jungblut in the fourth quarter followed by two more scores from the Seagulls - a 22-yard touchdown pass from QB Yoshihito Kinoshita to WR Osamu Hattori and a second Kaneoya field goal (27 yards).
One year ago the Seagulls won the first edition of the International Challenge Bowl 29-17 at the Dresden Monarchs.

No upsets in Pearl Bowl openers
(May 1, 2013) - The first round of this year's Pear Bowl, the X League's spring competition, ended without any major surprises - although the Asahi Beer Silver Star needed a fourth quarter comeback to avoid an upset by the All Mitsubishi Lions. The Lions took a 12-10 lead into the final quarter before QB Minoru Tono lead his team to a 23-12 win with two touchdown passes, the second one a 5-yard pass to RB Naoki Harikawa with two minutes and 20 seconds left to play.

Kajima Deers future uncertain
(April 30, 2013) - The Kajima Deers, one of the X League's most succesful teams, face an uncertain future after the 2013 X League season. Earlier in April the team announced that the Kajima Corporation will end its financial support at the conclusion of the 2013 season. The Deers, who played in the X League's first division since 1992, won the X League and national championships in the 1997 and 2009 seasons and advanced to the X League's championship game, the Japan X Bowl, an additional three times (1999, 2008 and 2012).
